Nuku'alofa, Tonga – The Hon Hu'akavameiliku, Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Tonga officially opened the Pacific Community’s (SPC) Polynesia Regional Office in Nuku’alofa.
“The opening of the Polynesia Regional office in Tonga truly is a milestone. This is an achievement for our government and for our Polynesian members in the Pacific”, expressed the Hon Hu'akavameiliku.
The Hon Hu'akavameiliku adds: “The presence of SPC on the ground means we will have direct access to services and programmes offered to Polynesian member countries of SPC. For Tonga in particular this will help increase focus on some of our key priorities requiring the support of SPC and other regional partners.”
The ceremony was attended by SPC’s Director General, Dr Stuart Minchin, the Hon Fekitamoeloa ʻUtoikamanu Minister of Foreign Affairs and Minister of Tourism of the Kingdom of Tonga, SPC’s Regional Director for Polynesia, Ms Leituala Kuiniselani Toelupe Tago - Elisara, and key representatives.
The new office, located at the heart of Nuku'alofa, will serve as a hub for SPC's operations in Polynesia, providing support and assistance to member countries in the region. It will be dedicated to strengthening partnerships with members, civil society organisations, and communities across Polynesia.
In his address, Dr Stuart Minchin said, " These [our ways of operating] are informed by Pacific ways of knowing, thinking and being, ensuring a solid foundation embedded in our values as Pacific and Polynesian people, all of which are critical to the operations of the office.”
The opening of the new regional office for Polynesia marks a significant milestone. It signifies SPC’s commitment to supporting the Pacific people and communities, ensuring their voices and perspectives are heard and valued. Furthermore, through effective partnerships, SPC aims to catalyse positive change in the region and help create a brighter future for all.
