Have you ever wondered what is the status of the tuna stocks in the western and central Pacific?

There are four main tuna stocks found in the Western and Central Pacific Ocean (WCPO) - skipjack tuna (Katsuwonus pelamis), yellowfin tuna (Thunnus albacares), bigeye tuna (Thunnus obesus) and albacore tuna (Thunnus alalunga).

The most recent Tuna Fishery Assessment Report published by SPC in 2021, which includes data up until 2020, indicates that all four target species are estimated to be in a healthy and sustainable state. None are considered to be overfished.

However, there is a very slight risk that overfishing may be occurring for the bigeye tuna. This may lead to issues in the future if it continued, and will be closely monitored through future assessments.

The western and central Pacific tuna fishery: 2020 overview and status of stocks report provides the latest information on primary tuna stocks targeted by the main industrial fisheries.
