World Anaesthesia Day in the Pacific

WAD

World Anaesthesia Day (16 October) unites the global anaesthesia community to celebrate progress and highlight ongoing challenges in safe, affordable care. Anaesthetists are often on the frontlines during emergencies, disasters and pandemics providing life-saving treatment.

WAD marks the historic first use of ether in surgery in 1846, a breakthrough that transformed patient care. Yet nearly 5 billion people still lack access to safe anaesthesia making awareness and advocacy crucial.

The 2025 theme, "Anaesthesiology in Health Emergencies," highlights the vital roles anaesthetists play in patient safety. The Pacific Society of Anaesthetists joins the global celebration, advocating for stronger regional emergency care and urging Pacific leaders to invest in the workforce, equipment and critical resources needed for safe surgical care, advancing universal health coverage.
