The Fiji Government in collaboration with the Pacific Community (SPC), the Climate Finance Access Network (CFAN), and the Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI), successfully hosted a “Workshop on climate finance access for Higher Education Institutions (HEIs)” in Fiji. The event gathered over 40 participants, including representatives from academia, government, and regional organisations, to enhance understanding and collaboration in addressing climate change challenges.
The workshop provided a vital platform for participants to engage in discussions about the complex climate finance landscape and explore effective strategies for developing high-quality climate finance proposals.
Dr. Sivendra Michael, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change, opened the workshop with remarks that underscored the significance of collaboration: “This workshop serves as a crucial opportunity to bring together diverse stakeholders to enhance our collective understanding of climate finance and develop actionable strategies that reflect our regional priorities.”
Keynote speaker Coral Pasisi, Director of Climate Change and Environmental Sustainability (CCES) at SPC, emphasised the importance of academia and research in the fight against climate change, stating, “By empowering our educational institutions to access and leverage climate finance, we can harness innovative solutions to tackle our unique challenges in the Pacific.”
Throughout the event, participants engaged in interactive sessions that covered topics such as identifying funding opportunities, building strategic partnerships, and implementing effective climate action initiatives. Attendees left with valuable insights and practical tools to support their efforts in mobilizing climate finance at the community and national levels.
SPC, GGGI and CFAN are committed to supporting Fiji Government’s efforts to enhance climate finance access, mobilisation and promote sustainable development. Together, we can build a more resilient future for the Pacific Islands.
