Pacific contributes to UN Food System Summit

Pacific contributes to UN Food System Summit

The Pacific makes an important, but under-recognized contribution to the global food system.  Despite this contribution, Pacific countries continue to face a complex set of challenges in realizing equitable benefits from the global system.

In the lead-up to the UN Food Systems Summit to be held in New York in September this year, SPC and its partners are identifying the region’s food challenges and highlighting the people and communities that are responding with community and nature-based solutions that seek to ensure all are fed and our food systems thrive.

The UN Food Systems Summit seeks to launch bold new actions, solutions and strategies to deliver progress on all 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), each of which relies on healthier, more sustainable and more equitable food systems. The Summit process hopes to jumpstart a transformation in the way the world produces, consumes and thinks about food.

SPC is leading the conversation in the Pacific through a number of actions and publications that guide thinking, conversation and innovation for impact regionally as well as globally.  On May 7, SPC hosted a webinar that launched the regional food systems dialogue through the story of a day in the life of Pou and Miri, a local boy and his friend the bat.  The webinar touched on fisheries, the gender dimensions of food systems, agribusiness and agritourism, nutrition, conservation and food security and sustainability. Follow the webinar below.

SPC has also published an evidence brief of Pacific Food Systems for the UN Summit that conveys three main messages: the Pacific is under-represented in the global food system, Pacific countries face unique challenges in realizing equitable benefits from the global system, and urgent local and global action is needed to manage climate change and other risks to ensure no one is left behind.  Read the brief here.

A Regional Food Systems Dialogue will take place on 20 May, with outcomes compiled at presented at the Global pre-Summit in Rome in July and the Summit in September in New York. Join us in this conversation as we work to ensure our unique regional food challenges amass strong support and our voices are prominent on the world stage.
