Sustainable energy management

CCCPIR’s sustainable energy management component started in January 2012 and assists public and private energy service providers in strengthening and improving their climate-related services and focus on sustainability, reliability and cost-effectiveness in the energy sector within the region.

It is being implemented in close collaboration with SPC, SPREP, the Pacific Power Association (PPA), EU, ADB and the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) in Fiji, Kiribati, Nauru, Tonga, Tuvalu and Vanuatu.

The energy component focuses on the following areas/ activities:

  • Advice for energy policy and planning
  • Targeted pre-investment and technical studies
  • Identification of potential funding sources and project proposal preparation
  • Outreach and knowledge sharing.

Achievements to date

  • Support to knowledge sharing activities for sustainable energy management in partnership with USP, SPC and PPA
  • Awareness and information sharing using various media, participation at regional and national renewable energy and energy efficiency workshops, presentations to a diverse range of stakeholders
  • One of the organising partners for the Pacific Islands launch of the United Nations 2012 'Year of Sustainable Energy For All'

  • Cooperation with SPC in renewable energy and fisheries
  • Support to SPC for review of energy policies and plans
  • Creating knowledge products in renewable energy and energy efficiency

  • Solar feasibility study for large-scale solar implementation

  • Briefing note on energy efficiency options for Vanuatu
  • Energy audit of the Vanuatu Meteorology and Geo-Hazards Department (VMGD) with ADB Promoting Energy Efficiency in the Pacific project phase two (ADB PEEP2)
  • Pre-feasibility study for solar PV at the VMGD, including a financial analysis;

Activities in 2013

  • Preparation of a household energy use survey for Port Vila and Luganville (with ADB PEEP2 and UNDP)
  • Solar Feasibility study and preparation of technical specification for a photovoltaic system at the VMGD building
  • Pre-feasibility studies for solar at the Department of Energy and the Ministry of Finance buildings
  • Preparation of a proposal for funding of solar energy on Government buildings
