About the database
SPCTerm is a bilingual – English & French – terminology database covering the work of the Pacific Community (SPC).
Accessible online, this platform is designed to be used by SPC staff, SPC member countries and territories, language and technical experts in SPC's fields of activity and anyone else interested in the organisation's projects and actions across the Pacific.
Terminology management at SPC
SPCTerm contains terminology entries from SPC’s various corporate units and technical divisions, across more than 25 work areas. The database is managed by SPC’s Translation team and is designed to ensure consistency in the terms used across the organisation's activities. SPC’s working languages are English and French.

Did you know?
English is the most widely used language in the region. French is spoken in four of the Pacific Community’s Pacific Island countries and territories (PICTs): French Polynesia, New Caledonia, Vanuatu, and Wallis & Futuna.
The Pacific region is known for its remarkable linguistic diversity, with around 1500 languages spoken across its islands, i.e. 25% of the total number of languages in the world.
However, it’s important to note that while English is widely used, the region is also home to hundreds of indigenous languages. For example, Papua New Guinea alone has over 800 distinct languages, making it the most linguistically diverse country in the world. In other Pacific nations, like Fiji, Nauru, and Samoa, English is commonly spoken alongside indigenous languages such as Fijian, Nauruan, and Samoan.
