A recent report launched by the Ministry of Fisheries and Marine Resources with WorldFish presents a snapshot of the status of community-based fisheries management. The report shows that the productivity and health status of fishing grounds is patchy across the Solomons. In some areas, there are reports that fishing grounds are still productive, but in many areas they are not. In areas reporting declines, fishing and harvesting is getting harder. This is often due to the way resources are being fished or harvested that people often don’t realise impacts fishing grounds – like destructive fishing practices or taking too much at a time, taking undersized fish, or not following local rules, like community tabus or national laws. We as a people depend on the sea for our needs. Declining fish stocks affect our ability to earn money and they also lose one of the healthiest food sources available. Management is needed so that fishing grounds can meet people’s needs, year after year.
